What is an effective conference interpreter?

Posted: June 4, 2013

I am of the view that expert training and deliberate practice is conducive to better performance. A good conference interpreter is one who commands excellent linguistic skills, extra-linguistic knowledge, i.e. a wide all round knowledge of the world.

An effective conference interpreter must be an excellent communicator whether or not the original speaker is able to communicate well.

Conference interpreting is teamwork, so he or she will need to work cooperatively and cohesively with his/her booth partner(s). He/She is also willing to invest the time to do prior research.
